Hi all. Very specific question. I have tried a hand-building class before, the kind where you shape things by hand without a wheel, and I enjoyed it but it was not what I actually wanted. What I want is the wheel, the spinning thing, the whole cliché from the film. Are those separate classes or is the wheel included in a general session? I do not want to book something and find out I am rolling coils again for two hours while the wheels sit in the corner. I am in Toronto and would happily travel across the city for the right studio.
Fair distinction, and worth asking about explicitly when you book because the two get lumped together in descriptions. Plenty of classes include both, with the wheel as the centrepiece and hand-building as a fallback if the wheel is not cooperating. If the wheel is the whole point for you, say so on the phone. For wheel throwing in Toronto I went to Pottery Studio 1 and the wheel was the main event rather than a demonstration. Expect the first attempt to collapse. Everyone’s does, and the instructor will have seen it several hundred times. Ask how many wheels the studio has per instructor, that decides how much actual wheel time you get.
