Letrozole, commonly known by its brand name Femara, is primarily used as a treatment for certain types of breast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. It functions as an aromatase inhibitor, which means it reduces estrogen levels in the body, thereby slowing or stopping the growth of estrogen-dependent cancer cells. In addition to its role in cancer treatment, Letrozole is also utilized in fertility treatments. It is effective in inducing ovulation in women experiencing anovulatory infertility, particularly those with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). By lowering estrogen levels, letrozole stimulates the secretion of hormones necessary for ovulation, making it a valuable option for women struggling to conceive. Letrozole dosage typically involves taking 2.5 mg once daily, often for five days, starting between the second and fifth day of the menstrual cycle when used for fertility purposes. For breast cancer treatment, the dosage may vary, but it is generally prescribed for an extended period, often up to five years or longer, depending on individual patient needs and responses. While letrozole is generally well-tolerated, it can cause side effects such as hot flashes, fatigue, and joint pain. Regular monitoring by healthcare providers is essential to manage these effects and ensure the treatment’s effectiveness.
