I’m over 18 and want to get my Texas learner’s permit. What are the steps I need to follow? Do I have to take any courses or tests, and are there any differences in the process compared to younger applicants?

If you’re 18 or older in Texas, getting a learner’s permit involves a few clear steps. For adults aged 18–24, you’re required to complete a 6-hour state-approved adult driver’s ed course (TDLR certified). After that, you must watch the Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) video, gather your documents (ID, proof of residency, Social Security Number), and pass the written knowledge exam at the DPS office.

If you’re 25 or older, taking the course is optional but highly recommended for confidence and preparation.

To see the full breakdown and get started easily, check out the full permit process for adults over 18 in TX.
