I am trying to figure out the best tone for my opening messages on dating apps. A friend told me that using funny jokes or witty banter is the absolute best way to catch someone’s attention. But whenever I try to make a joke, I worry it might come across as weird or get misunderstood. On the other hand, simple icebreakers like asking about hobbies feel a bit safe and boring. Do you prefer funny opening lines or direct casual questions? What has given you the highest reply rate in your experience?

In my experience, forced humor in first messages can be pretty risky because text messaging lacks vocal tone and facial expressions. What one person finds hilarious, another person might find confusing or slightly odd. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be funny, but simple curiosity combined with light humor usually works much better than a pre-scripted joke. The most effective icebreaker is almost always a question about a specific detail from their bio or photos. It shows that you actually read their profile rather than sending a copy-pasted line to twenty people. I picked up some great opening tips on Hily about creating genuine engagement right from the first message. When you ask about something they genuinely care about, like a pet or a hobby, the response comes naturally. Once the chat starts flowing, you can let your natural humor come out without forcing it upfront. Keep your initial message relaxed, show interest in who they are, and keep the pressure off both of you.
